Access does have more features, you're right on that.
Go back to browse mode and viola you done.Īccess takes much longer to learn, although the recent versions do have nice wizards to create a database so if you use a wizard and are happy with what it created, then Access might be easier in some respects there. To Create layout, simply go to layout mode, drag fields where ever you want them and color things right there.
No need to have a query formatted, no schema name, table name, punctuation, need to grant priv, etc. Ie if I want to find all the Anderson's I simply go to find mode and enter Anderson. To find data you simply go to find mode, and enter any part or the specific data you are trying to find. If you were new to databases I'm sure you would find FileMaker easier. It's hard to see a new way as easier or better, after all we are creatures of habit. What ever database you start in is going to be the one you think is easier and the better one. To be clear, my use of the HTML and Web features of FMP is limited, but my advice stands as submitted: your background with Access will only enhance your abilities with Filemaker Pro. Once understood, the rest should be easy to implement.
The basics are all the same, and I would advise your initial focus to be on the dynamics behind FMP’s relational aspects. Of course, lack of experience played a large part, but for you I would guess that your background with Access will add greatly to your ability to master FMP. I attempted to duplicate several databases in Access, and found the majority of my time was spent entering basic code just to create simple layouts. Field formatting, including pre-defined data entry is easy to create, and using values from a calculated result are simple to construct. Dim statements and variable declaration are non-existent in FMP, however, and complex macros are easy to compile and troubleshoot. Classes on Visual Basic taught me the workings of Microsoft’s programming language, and my Office 2000 Word uses macros of amazing complexity. My experience is from an opposite direction: I started with FMP 2.0 on an old Mac and migrated to FMP 5.0 on a PC.
